History Navsari ( Guajrat )
Navsari

Navsari
The history of Navsari city is very rich which is developed in the north of Surat district, in the east of Dang district, and in the west there is Arabian Sea roaring near it. The Purna River enters from Kurel village in Navsari Taluka. Here, The Purna river’s length is 36 km. Navsari district is south Gujarat's ancient and historical city. It is situated at around 150 feet above the sea level therefore in summers also the weather is pleasant here. Navsari is an important station on the broad gauge railway line between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Because of Ahmedabad - Mumbai National Highway No.8, Navsari is connected to all big cities of Gujarat through Gujarat State Transportation Corporation’s bus service.

Navsari was the main city of old Vadodara State before freedom. From 1st May 1949 Navsari was included in Surat district and in June,1964, at the time of reformation of Surat district it was included in Valsad district. The present Navsari District has come into existence since 2nd October 1997.According to old writings it can be seen that Navsari was famous from the 7th century. During the time of 671 A.D., it was known as Navsarika and this region was ruled by Laat Branch of Chalukya dynasty. It seems that king Avnijanashray Pulkeshi of this dynasty was ruling at that time. King Pulkeshi had defeated and driven out the Arabian Army which had attacked Navasarika. This Chalukyan rule seems to have continued till 740 A. D. During this time, weak Koli and Rajput population was scattered over the hill of Navsari.

It seems that at that time Shiladitya’s Guru Naagvardhana had stayed in the present Naag Talavdi area. Therefore this area became famous as Naag Manda” and gradually with passage of time this district’s present name “Navsari” came. In 825 A. D. the founder of Sant Panth, the great Saiyed Nuruddin alias Saiyed Sadat had stayed in Navsari’s Lunsikui area. As his miracles were spread in the surrounding villages, he became famous as Auliya or the great man. As per the past writings, due to this, Navsari’s fame had increased. As a sign of Auliyas fame in Lincikui area, today also Rojas, mosques, Hauj and other significant buildings can be seen in this area.

As mentioned before, Navsari was known as Naag Mandal. Before it was named Navsari it had different name like Naagvardhan, Naagshahi, Naagsharaka, Navsareh, Nagmandal and Paarsipuri which is supported by the past writings. It also seems that Navsari was also known as Paarsipuri. When Parsi’s had first stepped in the present Navsari, at that time its weather was very good ( Sari ) and it seems that due to this they derived the name Navsari as Nao-Sari.

Special from it is known that in 18th centuries 2nd decade by establishing rule of Marathas from Songadh to Navsari old Thame was developed. In 1898 AD in Navsari Jail, New police station, Sayajbag, Town Hall, Library, Varihomes, Hospitals, vegetable and fish market, Administrative officers and historical buildings have come into existence. Parshwanath’s Derasar is situated at Mudhomati in the east of the city tower, which shows that in ninth century Navsari might have been the main centre of Jain religion. There is a beautiful idol of Lord Bhrahmaji in a temple in Patva Sheri which is a prominent Jain and Hindu Vedic locality.Initially Navsari is known to have been colonized on various hills.

It is believed that due to increase in population colonization might have started in the low-lying areas. Latamaa, Banavad, Kamush Maholla, Musalman Maholla, Patvasheri, Dungdvad, Kutar Ni Khadki, Mota Mohalla, Damada Maholla, Vahorvaad are on the various hills, while Dasturvad, Desaivaad, Saanga Vaad, Kaanga Vaad, Bazaar Vaad, Gol Vaad, etc are situated in low-lying area. Navsari’s Tarota Bazaar is inhabited by Parsis. “Aatash Behram” was established in the middle of Parsi population and as a result of increased population the facility for Parsi Dakhama is made in the present Veraval area.

It is specially mentioned that in the second decade of the 18th century, Marathas came to Navsari from Sonegadh, took control of Navsari and developed the old station. In the year 1878 A. D. Jail, New station, Sayajibaug, Town Hall, Library, Vaarigruh, hospitals, clinics, vegetable and fish market, administrative offices and other historical buildings came into existence in Navsari.
In ancient times Navsari was known for its trade and industry. In the era before Christ Navsari is mentioned by the Greeks as a famous port among the ports on the western coast of India. Navsari’s hand weaving work was praised and its “Baasta”, a kind of cotton cloth, was so world famous that the foreign traders visited Navsari to know about weaving techniques. Navsari also become famous for its work of Jari embroidery. In Navsari, Sheth Jamshedji Jijibai’s name is leading in this regard.

In the north of Navsari there are Amarshanti towers on the bank of a river. Among it the tallest tower was built in 1877-78 A. D. by Nasarvaanji Ratanji Tata in the remembrance of his mother Kevalbai. The founder of Industrial Revolution and leading Industrialist, Sheth Jamshedji Nasarvanji Tata was born in this city. The house in which he was born is still maintained in its original condition in Dasturvadi area. Dadabhai Navaroji who was the leader of the Swaraj movement was also born in this land. The building of his birth place is still there in Kakwad. Sir Jamshedji Jijibai and Maharashtra’s famous dramatist Bal Ganesh Gandkari were also born in Navsari. In the city's southern area there is the oldest lake Dudhia, Ram Tekari is in the middle of it.

In the west of it there is Ashapuri Maata’s temple, among the gardens there is Jubilee garden and Mafatlal Park. During Dandi Satyagrah in 1930 A. D., Mahatma Gandhi had stayed over night on 3-4-1930. The road from which he had passed here is known as Mahatma Gandhi Road.Navsari city is an important centre of diamond industry.
